The Elizabethan period was characterized by significant cultural achievements, furniture in many cases takes existing medieval forms and overlays them with a profusion of decoration and ornamental work.

Influenced by French and Dutch and Flemish taste.

These pieces were copied in English colonies, where the chest on chest was known as a highboy.

Hepplewhite is mostly known for delicate chairs whose backs take a shield or oval form

• For his settee designs he relied on the same characteristic shield form





Thomas Chippendale

Chippendale popularized the rib band or ribbon‐ back armchair

(This style detail is aligned with Rococo)





Thomas Sheraton

• Sheraton created pieces that were rectilinear, small-scale with delicate, refined profiles.

• His chairs are known for their straight legs and backs (aligns with Neoclassical style)
